Accountant / Payroll Specialist At BAYLESS SCHOOL DISTRICT

Location: St. Louis, Missouri

Job Description

Accountant / Payroll Specialist


GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists in the maintenance, examination, analysis, reconciliation and verification of financial records. Performs duties to coordinate, document and process payroll for all employees. Maintains employee leave accounting and retirement records, and prepares reports as required. Present a positive image when communicating with staff members. Properly handle all confidential matters.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist with the preparation of the district budget.
  • Assist with financial audits as needed including DESE and other regulatory agencies.
  • Perform various financial analyses as needed.
  • Process monthly payroll for all employees. Import required data from other district software programs.
  • Process and send direct deposit, tax, retirement files and payments electronically.
  • Report new hires to Missouri Department of Social Services.
  • Maintains payroll records on all leaves, including medical, FMLA, LOA and Worker’s Compensation.
  • Verify calendar for each group prior to the start of every school year.
  • Maintain all court ordered disbursements and respond to interrogatories.
  • Comply with all payroll tax requirements, including local, state, and federal regulations and filing local, state and federal payroll tax returns. Process and file W-2, W-3, wage statements, etc. Work with tax agencies to resolve any outstanding issues.
  • Research inquiries on payroll, time card issues and benefits. Take appropriate action to resolve problems identified.
  • Processes and updates state retirement plan (PSRS/PEERS) information and payments.
  • Prepare deduction and final pay calculation to employees that had been on leave or at separation of employment.
  • Perform monthly review of all insurance billings.
  • Prepare materials for external or internal audits.
  • Complete employer verifications as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • All other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or equivalent training beyond High School preferred.
  • Three to five years of payroll experience required.
  • Strong organizational, computer and communication skills.
  • Ability to operate office equipment such as copier, fax machine, calculator and multi-line phone.
  • Knowledge of software currently used in the district such as Keystone, Infinite Campus, Talent Ed, and Frontline Technologies. Experience with software conversions/implementations is helpful.
  • Ability to assume responsibility, display initiative and exercise good judgment.
