Reporting to the Director of Information Technology Services, the position is responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the Technology Infrastructure resources across Aecon, pro-actively monitoring and maintaining the health of the overall IT Infrastructure. The role also focuses on the cost effective scalability and planning to avoid system performance degradation and downtime of Aecon’s IT infrastructure. This includes developing, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing key functional areas, particularly network infrastructure, server infrastructure, data communications, and telecommunication systems. This role interacts with key managers in the functional areas of IT Services, as well as key business unit managers. Key Responsibilities
Areas of Accountability: This includes but is not limited to the following aspects of IT Infrastructure and Systems:
Maintenance planning, execution and monitoring
Disaster recovery plans and testing
Monitoring/identification of trends in usage, traffic, storage
Management and monitoring of new system rollouts
End-user administration, updates, deployments and support
- IT systems budget planning, management and updating
Key Role Initiatives: Aecon’s systems are mission critical to the overall functioning of the company. In order to ensure the adequacy, stability and continuity of the IT systems, the Manager of TIS is responsible for introducing and/or maintaining the following management initiatives (in addition to managing the areas of accountability as noted above)
Ensuring the ITIL framework is applied to company IT operations
- Ensuring tasks and activities on compliancy tracking are completed and adhered to
- Providing weekly reporting on IT performance (including commentary) and communicating this performance to the IT Services management team.
Ensuring adherence to (and enhancing) the Aecon change tracking system for the planning, approving, implementation of all changes. This would include a comprehensive document covering the following: - description - risk assessment - planning - testing - back out plan - communication - post implementation review
Establish and maintain performance objectives for all IT spending and establish a protocol for business case development/RFQ/evaluation/recommendation/approval/deployment for IT Infrastructure purchases. This will address blanket purchase items, small consumables and large purchases to provide business rigor to the IT spend.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible to provide ongoing leadership (in conjunction with the CIO and VP IT Services) in several IT managerial areas. These include, but are not limited to, the following areas:
o Strategic Planning - Identifying, articulating and recommending strategic direction for the overall company IT architecture.
o Budget Planning - Provide input into departmental budget planning.
o Budget Monitoring - Monitor and follow up on budget planning efforts
o Financial Monitoring and Trending - Track cost elements on ongoing standard purchases to identify trends and make pro-active decisions on future buying and deployment decisions.
o Expansion Planning - Identify long term performance and load trends and develop plans and procedures for system expansion
o End of Life Assessments - Track existing systems, architecture and devices and plan for end of life replacements.
o Communications - Communicate requirements from the I.T. team on an individual and departmental level as well as interface to the Aecon community regarding ongoing initiatives and awareness of current or imminent issues that are relevant to them
o Project Management - Schedule, communicate, monitor and deliver large I.T. changes in a timely and orderly manner
o Provide management, monitoring and follow-up of user support requirements by leveraging existing support ticketing system and infrastructure.
o Continuous Improvement - Identify key I.T. deliverables to the business and provide a means of tracking to assure continuous improvement
o Storage and recovery - Maintain backup and recovery systems for Aecon and periodically test processes to ensure they are current and functional
o Business Continuity Planning - Maintain, update and test (including internal and vendor-centric firedrills) the Aecon BCP to ensure currency and completeness.
o Security and Protection Planning and monitoring - Maintain security processes to protect the Aecon environment and personnel using it
o System redundancy planning/architecting - Identify a system redundancy plan (in conjunction with the disaster recovery plan) to describe points of redundancy and single failure points. Identify the risks associated with the single failure versus the costs of making it redundant. Note that would include hardware, networks (internal and external) and personnel.
o Deployment Standards - Establish and maintain standard processes for the order, configuration and deployment of all hardware and systems within the Aecon’s IT Infrastructure network.
o Develop and maintain documentation of the IT Infrastructure network diagrams and all procedural and instructional documentation.
Required Knowledge & Skills
- Minimum of a Post Secondary Education with information technology degree or diploma for a Canadian accredited institution.
Minimum of 3 - 5 years of experience in managing a multi-site IT infrastructure.
- Demonstrable experience and training with Windows O/S and "Active Directory", Exchange, TCPIP networking.
Experience in managing and tracking a significant IT budget.
Ability to manage and lead a team of IT personnel
Strong leadership and communication skills
Ideally the candidate should possess a knowledge of multiple technologies including (but not limited to) Blade, SAN, TCPIP, Exchange, AS400, Cisco, Symantec, wireless LAN.
Ability to develop a defendable budget and maintain and track corresponding purchases.
Ability to handle multiple deadlines and set priorities
