Technical Writer Mitacs Intern – Fixed-Term 8-Month Contract
Your Role
Reporting to the Head of Communications or company’s lead Technical Writer, the Technical Writer Intern is a hands-on support role that will have a significant impact on 1QBit’s external technical communications. At the core, this role will be responsible for developing and editing content in support of ensuring quality technical information is disseminated to business and scientific audiences. The successful candidate will be someone with a minimum of two years’ study in a technical field at the undergraduate level who is seeking a Technical Writer role with a broad scope of duties and learning opportunities. We are seeking an organized, and highly motivated individual who can work independently to solve problems and complete tasks, but also excels when working in a team environment.
What You’ll Do
- Work alongside the lead Technical Writer, SMEs, and other Communications Department team members as needed to help create high-quality, external-facing documents either from scratch or by improving upon existing documents
- Partner with the lead Technical Writer and SMEs to ensure documents are accurate, consistent, up to date, complete, and in accordance with 1QBit document management standards as set by the lead Technical Writer
- Collaborate with other Communications Department team members to ensure consistency in workflow and writing style
- Draft non-technical articles for business audiences based on SME research papers and white papers
- Create tutorials, walkthrough guides, and FAQ documentation as needed
- Incorporate feedback from both internal users and external customers to ensure continuous quality in our documents
- Advise SMEs and other content creators on conventions, advocating readability and consistency
- Identify opportunities for improvement in documentation creation and publishing workflows
- Perform other ad hoc writing and editing tasks as assigned

What You’ll Bring

- An engineering, computer science, or science degree, or a degree from any STEM field would be preferred; or 2–3 years of experience in authoring customer-facing technical documents for a business audience;
- Only current students are eligible to apply (Masters, PhD and Post Doc)
- Thesis or extensive essay writing experience would be preferred
- Experience with structured, topic-based writing and impeccable technical writing skills
- Strong research skills, as well as the ability to analyze and gather information from multiple sources to develop and update learning resources and other documents
- Near-perfect grammar, but with the flexibility to adapt to in-house style, rules, and historical conventions
- Attention to detail, and the ability to consistently produce clear, concise, comprehensive, and accurate documents
- Superior communication skills, both written and verbal
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Advanced skills in one or more of Microsoft Office, Apple iWork, or G Suite
- A drive to proactively seek out opportunities to help move projects forward and contribute to their improvement
- An openness to soliciting feedback to improve in terms of performance and, in turn, continually providing input to team members to elevate team performance and contribute to 1QBit’s culture
